‘Mollusk Perpetual’ really doesn’t quite have the same ring to it as ‘Oyster Perpetual’

Turns out pearls don’t come from oysters. Oysters are members of the Ostridae family, in the phylum Mollusca, while pearls are grown in mollusks from the Pteriidae family of the same phylum.

Screw planned obsolescence. Planning for permanence—planned permanence—is how we keep this planet inhabitable long term.

Largely speaking, the products we design have permanence. Whether that’s in a landfill, polluting the oceans, or in faithfully fulfilling their intended purpose.

From the 5 Boroughs to the 5 Gyres, capitalism’s lack of mindfulness in designing for the long term is choking our ability to exist on the planet.

We can do better than this.
